Our path to
Carbon Negative
Carbon negativity is the cornerstone of our regenerative business goals. Our partnership with the Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund makes that possible.

Our Path
To Carbon Negative
Partnering for the Planet
From our very beginning we’ve partnered with the Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund (previously the Juneau Carbon Fund). The ACRF is a community program of nonprofit Renewable Juneau that offers individuals and businesses the opportunity to offset some or all of their carbon footprints in a way that also has a deep impact on our community. Our partnership has pledged to offset 125% of our carbon footprint with the goal to be Alaska’s first carbon negative business.
Assessing our Carbon Footprint
We worked with ACRF and our aviation partners over a series of months to accurately assess the carbon footprint of our tours. We identified more than 10 distinct scenarios for EACH tour type that we calculated our impact for. The main factors that influence our trip’s carbon footprint include the number of guests, meals, driving distance in town, aircraft type, and flight time. To account for a margin of error, and for non-consumables used by our guests on each trip, we added a 10% ‘de minimus’ value to the initial assessment.
How We Reduce and Offset
We’re committed to first reducing our carbon footprint through efficient scheduling that consolidates flights and fills return trips whenever possible. We also prioritize using reusable containers, using compostable packaging for consumables, and diverting waste by composting and recycling. The rest we offset through the fund. To achieve carbon negativity we offset 125% of the assessed footprint of all of our trips and activities.
The Results
The Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund uses the funds from our trips, other businesses, and from individual contributors to replace oil burning heating systems with modern electric heat pump technology in low-income homes. Juneau has cheap, clean, reliable hydroelectric power, and these super efficient systems greatly reduce the heating costs and carbon footprint of these homes. The CO2 saved by this conversion is the reduction that the fund is able to sell to us! This has created a dual environmental and community impact that is an example of the type of climate solutions we can implement at the local level!

“Our region has already experienced about 3ºF increase in average winter temperatures over the past 60 years, with a decrease in annual snowfall at sea level from approximately 109 inches to 93 inches. […]
As a community, we can make changes that will contribute to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases in our homes, workplaces or our own businesses and do more to prepare for the coming changes to our environment.”

“For Juneau residents and visitors, the rapid retreat of the Mendenhall Glacier is a powerful reminder. Of particular concern are impacts to Juneau’s hydropower resources, and to salmon and other marine fish and wildlife that are important to our economy and recreation.”
