Peak Season
Juneau Bear Viewing

Waterfall Creek, Chichagof Island

July 20th – September 10

An Unforgettable Experience

Shee Kaax (Chichagof Island) is the largest of the ABC Islands and part of one of the world’s highest-density brown bear ecosystems. Like Admiralty and Baranof, it is rich with Tlingít history, congressionally protected wilderness, and salmon-fed brown bear habitat unmatched anywhere in Southeast Alaska.

Peak season bear viewing at Waterfall Creek coincides with the return of the pink, chum, and coho salmon. We travel to this small river system to watch brown bears fishing in the rapids below a dramatic waterfall—an iconic late-summer bear viewing scene. During the peak of the salmon run, bear activity here is as good as anywhere in Alaska, with multiple bears feeding, interacting, and moving naturally through the coastal rainforest.

Juneau Bear Viewing Inclusions:

Access to Waterfall Creek is via a stunning 30-minute floatplane flight from Juneau across Admiralty and Chichagof Islands. Your USFS permits, lunch, and all transportation are included on our guided trips. These trips are also carbon-negative through our partnership with the Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund.

Peak Season Details:

We operate Waterfall Creek trips from mid-July through mid-September to align with the height of the salmon run. For dates slightly outside these windows, please email us directly for options. Custom private itineraries and optional flightseeing over the Juneau Icefield can also be arranged.

What Our Guests Say About Waterfall Creek

“Fantastic tour, can’t say enough great things. Peter is the lead guide/owner and provides a world class experience.

We took the Chichagof island tour, got to see a lot of bears but what made the trip so great was how knowledgeable and accommodating Peter is. He even greeted us by name when we first arrived. Wild Coast is well equipped with high quality gear that is well organized and prepared for each individual guest.

There are a lot of tours in Juneau, many of them are led by short-timers and college students from the lower 48. If you want a great trip from local guide who truly knows and understands the area, book with Wild Coast Excursions!!”

★★★★★ — Michael H.

“Wonderful trip! Peter was very communicative throughout the planning. Mattheus was our guide for the trip and he was awesome! He was very knowledgeable about the area and bear viewing. Great experience without the crowds! Highly recommend!”

Please Bring:

  • A camera with a good zoom and an extra battery (not required).
  • Any medications that you need daily.

Booking Policies:

  • To secure bookings and acquire your permits, we need a payment in full at the time of booking. We recommend booking early as our trip availability is extremely limited.
  • We will gladly work with you to reschedule if needed. The more notice you can give us the better!
  • If you need to cancel your trip entirely, this is our cancellation policy:

    • For cancellations 59-30 days before: a 50% refund of the cost of your trip
    • Cancellations less than 30 days before your trip are non-refundable

Essential Trip Info:

  • Bear sightings at Waterfall Creek are highly likely, but never guaranteed — this is real Wilderness Alaska.
  • Our 5–6 hour trip duration may run slightly longer depending on weather and floatplane scheduling. We always work with guests to accommodate timing needs, and extended time in the field is typically a bonus for wildlife viewing.
  • Trip times are influenced by Juneau’s daily port schedule. Morning departures often allow for a longer experience than afternoon trips. If your group needs a modified schedule, please reach out and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
  • Waterfall Creek is a true wilderness site with no facilities or shelter. We follow all Leave-No-Trace Principles and pack out everything we bring in.
  • Trips operate in all safe weather conditions. Guests must dress for variable coastal weather—bear viewing is often better on cool, overcast days than on warm sunny ones.

Guest Requirements:

  • The minimum age for our group trips is 12 years old. The minimum age for a private trip is 8.
  • Our small aircraft have a per passenger weight limit of 250lbs (113kg) per seat. There is a $300 per person charge for guests over this limit.
  • Guests must be able to walk 2 miles over uneven and sometimes slippery ground to reach the viewing areas. Guests who need special accommodation should consider a private trip.
  • We keep strict control over all food and scented items. Please limit the scented items you bring, and please let us know about all of them.
  • Each guest is limited to one backpack each. You must be able to easily carry everything you bring with you.
  • All guests must agree to follow the guide’s directions at all times.
  • Guests must disclose all pertinent medical history and bring any required medications.
  • All guests must sign a liability waiver before departing.
  • Due to weather and variations in flight schedules caused by weather delays, it is strongly recommended that you do not schedule other tours on the same day as our bear viewing trips.

Wild Coast Excursions reserves the right to cancel any trip due to unsafe weather, inadequate trip sign ups (2 guests), inappropriate guest health or fitness, or any other safety issues. In the event we have to cancel your trip, we will make every attempt to reschedule it. If we cannot reschedule your trip, we will issue you a full refund minus a $100 per person non-refundable permit fee.
