Juneau Private Bear Viewing Tours
Custom Pack Creek & Waterfall Creek Bear Viewing
May-September
A Private Bear-Viewing Experience You’ll Never Forget
Our private bear-viewing trips focus on the best wilderness bear habitats near Juneau: Pack Creek on Admiralty Island and Waterfall Creek on Chichagof Island. These locations offer the most reliable and rewarding private bear viewing in Southeast Alaska. For photographers or expedition-style travelers, custom itineraries to other remote Tongass wilderness areas can be arranged.
The ABC Islands (Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof) hold the highest concentration of brown bears in the world and are renowned for their rich Indigenous history, pristine wilderness, and salmon-fed ecosystems. Our private tours adjust destinations based on your travel dates and the seasonal behavior of the bears, ensuring you experience the best conditions available.
Peak viewing season coincides with the salmon runs from late July through mid-September, when bears concentrate along creeks and waterfalls. In early summer, bears forage along estuaries and tidal meadows after emerging from hibernation, creating excellent opportunities for quiet, uncrowded private bear viewing.
Your private trip begins with a 25–40 minute floatplane flight over the Tongass wilderness to reach the bear-viewing areas. All permits, lunch, and transportation are included. Every trip is also carbon-negative through our partnership with the Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund.

What Our Guests Say About Private Bear Viewing
“Peter was fantastic guide- knowledgeable and the perfect balance between letting nature speak and providing information. l felt like Jane Goodall watching all the social interactions among the various bear groups over the course of 4 plus hours. An autonomic workout. Can’t rate our experience high enough.”
★★★★★ — Dawn B.
“This is a must try experience if you are coming to Juneau. This is the best place in the world to see brown bears in their true habitat. Our guide Peter was knowledgeable, super friendly and amazing with our group of 6. We went to see the bears in a beautiful protected place, away from the crowds. We were taught about their behavior, environment and what to do in case one of the bears gets curious with us. We had two bears fishing salmons 100 yards from us for 2 whole hours.
We would definitely repeat it and recommend to everyone that loves this kind of private excursions. Cheers to Peter for our amazing day!!!”
★★★★★ — Rafael O.
What Our Guests See on Private Bear Viewing Trips
Private Bear Viewing Trip Information (The Fine Print)
Private trips book out in advance — contact us early to customize your custom bear-viewing experience.
Meeting Locations:
All guests arriving by cruise ship or staying downtown will meet at the “Peratrovich Plaza” near the downtown Juneau Public Library. This is in the middle of the Port of Juneau, just a few minutes walk North of the Mt. Robert’s Tramway and the drop off for the AJ Dock Shuttle. The Plaza is the van loading zone between the “Pier 49” building and the multi-story library and parking garage decorated with the large mural of Elizabeth Peratrovich.
Please contact us if you arrive at the AJ Dock within 30 minutes of the trip departure, or if you are staying at a hotel.
Guest who are driving themselves should meet at Ward Air‘s office for outfitting. Juneau private trip guests staying outside the central downtown area should please contact us to arrange their pick up.
Remote Pickups for Yachts, Lodges & Communities:
We routinely meet private groups at remote anchorages, fishing lodges, and neighboring Southeast Alaska communities by floatplane. Your guide and aircraft can pick you up directly at your yacht or private vessel for a private air transfer, or we can meet you at one of our bear-viewing locations and begin the experience from there.
This service is regularly used by guests traveling aboard yachts and superyachts, as well as clients staying at high-end wilderness and fishing lodges throughout the region. Remote pickups and custom routes make it easy to enjoy a private bear-viewing experience without returning to Juneau first.
We are also able to coordinate inter-community transfers, meeting or dropping guests in nearby towns when the itinerary requires it.
For yacht-based guests, we can assist with multi-day bear viewing, custom wilderness tours, or pairing your trip with helicopter glacier trekking near Juneau.
If you’d like to arrange a remote floatplane pickup, simply email us with your itinerary, anchorage, or lodge location — our team will handle all logistics so you can enjoy your private tour.
Please Bring:
- Your sense of ADVENTURE and a love of wild places!

- Any medications that you need daily.
Booking Policies:
- To secure bookings and acquire your permits, we need a payment in full at the time of booking. We recommend booking early as our trip availability is extremely limited.
- We will gladly work with you to reschedule if needed. The more notice you can give us the better!

Essential Trip Info:
- Private bear viewing trips are among the most exclusive wilderness experiences available in Juneau. While Pack Creek and Waterfall Creek host other permitted groups, these sites remain quiet, wilderness settings. Sharing the area with a small number of like-minded visitors is still a world-class, private Alaskan bear viewing experience.
- Bear sightings are very likely but never guaranteed. These are true wilderness environments within the Tongass National Forest, and wildlife activity varies with tides, salmon, and seasonal behavior.
- Trip length is typically 6 hours, but may run longer depending on flight logistics, tides, and conditions. Extended time in the field is common — and often enhances the experience — and we will always coordinate with your schedule as closely as possible.
- Pack Creek and Waterfall Creek are undeveloped wilderness sites with no structures, restrooms, or shelters. All trips follow strict Leave-No-Trace Principles principles, and we pack out all waste.
- Trips operate in all safe weather conditions. Guests should arrive dressed for Southeast Alaska’s marine climate. Overcast or lightly rainy days often provide better bear viewing than hot, sunny weather.
Guest Requirements:
- The minimum age for our group trips is 12 years old. The minimum age for a private trip is 8.
- Our small aircraft have a per passenger weight limit of 250lbs (113kg) per seat. There is a $300 per person charge for guests over this limit.
- Guests must be able to walk 1/2 mile over uneven and sometimes slippery ground to reach the viewing area.
- We keep strict control over all food and scented items. Please limit the scented items you bring, and please let us know about all of them.
- Each guest is limited to one backpack each. You must be able to easily carry everything you bring with you.
- All guests must agree to follow the guide’s directions at all times.
- Guests must disclose all pertinent medical history and bring any required medications.
- All guests must sign a liability waiver before departing.
- Due to weather and variations in flight schedules caused by weather delays, it is strongly recommended that you do not schedule other tours on the same day as our bear viewing trips.
Wild Coast Excursions reserves the right to cancel any trip due to unsafe weather, inadequate trip sign ups (2 guests), inappropriate guest health or fitness, or any other safety issues. In the event we have to cancel your trip, we will make every attempt to reschedule it. If we cannot reschedule your trip, we will issue you a full refund minus a $100 per person non-refundable permit fee.
